Nokia introduces mobile chat with the Nokia 3310

Published September 1, 2000

Nokia has today announced a new mobile phone, the Nokia 3310, with a unique chat function, allowing users to chat with text messages on their phones while on the move. With this innovation, Internet chat groups will no longer be confined to the desktop. The Nokia 3310 has been designed particularly for young people and the young at heart, for whom the mobile phone is an important lifestyle accessory and who are already extensively using various messaging services. The Nokia 3310 was unveiled at the “Don’t be bored. Be totally board.” lifestyle event in Oberhausen, Germany, on September 1. In Asia Pacific, the Nokia 3310 was simultaneously launched at “Nokia Unplugged” concerts held in Hong Kong, Manila, Philippines, and Cheng Du, China. The product will be available in the 4th quarter, 2000.

The chat function allows you to have a conversation, similar to the chat services on the Internet, with the other party by using short messages. The chat feature is based on enhanced SMS messaging in which you can send and receive chat messages when the Nokia 3310 is in chat mode. With the Nokia 3310, it is possible to send a chat message even to a phone that does not have the chat functionality since the messaging channel is the normal SMS. The message is then received in the form of an SMS.

Mobile chat is fast, easy, and even anonymous if you so choose. When the phone is in chat mode, you can automatically send and receive chat messages. The messaging functionality has an easy-to-scroll chat history on your phone screen, and all messages are identified by the given chat nickname. You can give yourself your own nickname with which your message is sent to the recipient. The phone supports point-to-point chat between two persons, and with the operator- dependent Nokia FriendsTalk service also launched today, it is possible to engage in multipoint chat with several people simultaneously.

“We are very pleased to announce an innovation that represents the next wave in messaging services. Mobile chat is a logical evolution of SMS based services. This chat application will allow the formation of entirely new types of mobile communities. The chat function will appeal to the needs of today’s trendy users, who will now be able to take their chat rooms with them wherever they go. For operators, mobile chat offers the combined advantage of a hit service and a future- proof growth path,” said Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Europe and Africa.

The new phone is small and slim, weighing only 133 grams. Despite its small size, it offers users an extensive array of features. In addition to the new chat function, templates allow you to build personalized standard messages. Concatenated messaging enables you to type longermessages – the Nokia 3310 automatically connects up to three messages together making the message nearly three times longer than normal SMS messages. The multiple send feature of the Nokia 3310 makes it possible to send a message to multiple recipients. With the Nokia 3310 it is also possible to send picture messages to other picture message-enabled Nokia phones. Other attractions are the new games, Space Impact and Bantumi, and full editable profiles that are downloadable over the air, consisting of a screensaver, a ringing tone, and a profile name.

The Nokia 3310 is equipped with the Nokia Naviä Key, the famous innovation enabling easy access to phone features. A sensitive built-in antenna makes the phone convenient to carry and use. The GSM 900/1800 phone also operates on EGSM (Extended GSM) 900 networks, which allows operators with access to this bandwidth to expand network capacity. The standard NiMH battery provides up to 4 hours and 30 minutes of talk time and up to 260 hours of standby time. Xpress-on front and back covers are available in 6 different colors. Accessories include a new Mobile Holder for the car (MBC-6) and a new Desktop Stand (DVC-10). The phone supports 28 language options. Language availability depends on where the phone is sold.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. The company is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, broadband and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, Nokia’s net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 60 000 people.

PRESS RELEASE

The Nokia 6210 is the first GSM product to comply with certification criteria of the GSM Certification Forum (GCF)

Published May 18, 2000

Nokia has today announced that the Nokia 6210, the company’s latest GSM 900/1800 WAP and HSCSD enabled mobile phone for the classic segment, has passed certification of the GSM Certification Forum (GCF). The Nokia 6210 is the first GSM product in the world to receive this new certification, which is to date already supported by 100 operators, representing a combined subscriber base of over 150 million customers. In addition, the 14 largest GSM terminal manufacturers that provide more than 95 percent of all GSM handsets sold worldwide have signed Declarations of Participation in the GSM Certification Forum.

“Nokia is proud to be the first mobile phone manufacturer to receive certification for its product from the GSM Certification Forum. We are strongly committed to support GCF in its work, and we feel that there is a clear need for this kind of additional voluntary testing- and approval process to allow for a faster introduction of new technologies and solutions across all GSM markets, especially in an increasingly complex future convergent market place,” says Anssi Vanjoki, Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones.

The GSM Certification Forum is a voluntary organization, which was announced during the GSM World Congress 2000 in Cannes. It is an independent program that aims to implement, verify, and monitor an entirely new global voluntary certification process for testing GSM handsets and terminals. The GCF program is designed to provide independent and complementary augmentation of existing regulatory requirements and the R&TTE Directive (Radio & Telecommunications Terminal Equipment).

“Voluntary Certification brings benefits for everyone,” says Horst Domeier, Chairman, GCF Steering Group. “For manufacturers, it simplifies new product entry and reduces the cost of multiple testing and approval processes. For operators, it provides further assurance that certified terminals will work on their network. Most importantly, for GSM customers this global program will reduce interoperability problems worldwide when handsets or terminals move from one network to another. We are very happy that Nokia is the forerunner in the implementation of the GCF certification.”

Certification sets out clear steps for terminal manufacturers to follow and a visible audit trail for testing assurance. As well as ensuring an even higher degree of interoperability, the forum process provides ‘one-stop verification’ which can significantly shorten the product-to-market time for manufacturers. Through the forum, operators and terminal manufacturers have created a new testing standard that provides greater confidence in terminal device functionality and interoperability which can give GSM customers a high degree of confidence.

Nokia is paving the way to the Mobile Information Society with its innovative products and solutions. The company is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, Nokia’s net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 56 000 people.

Nokia Introduces New Premium Phone for the World Traveler

Published February 23, 2000

According to Nokia research, more than 40 million people travel between the Americas, Europe and/or Asia every year. More than 30% of these frequent fliers are business travelers that need to be in contact with their office or family in great number of destinations. The Nokia 8890 phone simplifies international travel, offering automatic network selection and a real-time clock, which can automatically (network dependent) set the correct local time.

With a blue-tinted illuminated display and only 3.2 ounces (91 grams), the Nokia 8890 phone is one of the smallest phones ever made by Nokia. It combines new features such as voice dialing, predictive text input and picture messaging with design resembling that of the Nokia 8850 (dual band GSM 900/1800). The matte aluminum magnesium cover of the Nokia 8890 makes a pleasing contrast with the chrome details of the keys and the frame around the display and reflects the next design trend – subtle colors and clean lines combined with timeless simplicity.

“The Nokia 8890 phone is unlike any other world phone on the market, it is premium in every detail. Although fashion influences our work, we at Nokia do not follow trends. Being at forefront of design means that you really have to be in tune with what’s happening in fashion, architecture and other areas, ” said Søren Jenry Petersen, Vice President, Cellular Mobile Telephones, Nokia Mobile Phones. “The Nokia 8890 is reflective of this and our ability to build technologically advanced products with sophisticated features.”

The innovative features of the Nokia 8890 phone include voice dialing, allows the user to store up to 8 voice tags in the phone memory. Once the voice tag is recorded, a phone call can be made simply by activating the feature with a single keystroke, or the button on the headset, and saying the prerecorded name to the phone.

The Nokia 8890 has an infrared link for wireless communication with a compatible Nokia phone or a compatible PC or printer. And the Nokia 8890 phone supports standard communications protocols. You can transfer, for example, phone numbers with the infrared link between compatible phones or you can download new phone numbers and ringing tones over the air. The infrared port of the Nokia 8890 phone enables the transfer of phonebook entries and messages between compatible phones and for data transfer using the phone’s built-in modem. Another new feature is the real-time clock, which can automatically receive the correct local time from the network where service is available. The Nokia 8890 has a built-in vibrating alert, and it supports all three wireless voice codecs, HR, FR, and EFR, as well as the extended GSM 900 bandwidth, the EGSM band. The standby time of the Nokia 8890 phone up to six days and talk time is from 2to 3 hours and 20 minutes, depending on network conditions.

Nokia introduces its most rugged GSM phone

Published February 23, 2000

“The Nokia 6250 is a truly rugged product. It clearly communicates that it does not aim to look sporty or trendy, but it really fulfills our ambitious quality criteria. The Nokia 6250 is built tough from the inside out. The thick covers, the internal cushioning of the circuit board, the waterproof membranes, and the sealing of the covers among other advanced durable mechanical solutions enable our customers to enjoy the performance of the Nokia 6250 under extreme conditions. I am confident that this product will find its customers among outdoor professionals, field service personnel and recreational outdoor hobbyists,” said Søren Jenry Petersen, Vice President, Cellular Mobile Telephones, Nokia Mobile Phones.

The Nokia 6250 opens up an interesting opportunity for companies to utilize the WAP infrastructure in their field service information management. Service staff for instance can fetch their tasks out in the field by using the WAP terminal, report faults directly to the company database as well as inform the customer directly of the spare parts status at the warehouse. Combined with the Nokia WAP Server 1.0, companies can quickly and cost effectively build their own wireless service network that is ready for the rugged outdoor environment and also utilizes the flexibility and scalability of modern WAP technology. Outdoor enthusiasts will also appreciate the possibility to access weather and news services while skiing, hiking or sailing, for instance.

The design of the Nokia 6250 follows the features of the Nokia classic segment, with special additional features required by professional customers in rugged environments. Shock absorbers among other tough mechanics enable the phone to withstand rough treatment. In addition to normal phone features and the WAP 1.1 compatible browser, the unique rugged features of the Nokia 6250 include automatic volume control, sound level meter (dB representation), stopwatch, more accurate battery monitor and signal strength indicator, user selectable keypad lock time and unlock code, timed profiles, currency conversion from idle mode and display contrast adjustment. The task journal can be used to keep track of working times, expenses and other comments. The information can be summarized and transferred to another compatible mobile phone or other device. The Nokia 6250 provides data connectivity either via infrared or a cable at a data speed of up to 14.4 kbps.

The Nokia 6250 weighs 167 g, and the volume of the product is 159 cc.
